Abacus Mental Math 101

So how does moving a few beads here and there help your kid become a math whiz? Well, it actually lies on the "here and there" movement of those beads!

You see, each one of us tend to be either right-brain-dominant (creative) or keft-brain-dominant (logical). And it is only when these two hemispheres of the brain are used simultaneously when you can reach a holistic development of the brain.

With the mental arithmetic method, your child reinforces a quick communication between their brain (left side) and their hand movements (right side).

Three Stages of Abacus Mental Math

Now, most mental arithmetic courses would have three stages to them (some can offer less, some can have more). And these stages are the following:

First stage- this is where the physical abacus is used. They get familiarized with each bead and its functions. They will get a deeper sense or understanding of what numbers mean and what different equations look like.

Second stage- in this stage, the physical abacus is taken away and it is replaced by a paper abacus. Yes, that's an abacus printed in a sheet of paper. In this stage, they would move the abacus beads only through their minds while looking at the paper abacus.

Third stage- obviously, this is the "real" math happens. In this stage, they can manipulate or calculate the abacus simply in their minds.

The mental math method can be hard to understand at first. But it is one of the best methods to learn and enjoy math for kids. So if you want your kids to excel in math (and other subjects) you should definitely look further about math.
